Mission Statement

The purpose of the Leadership Enhancement Program and Award Scheme is to provide both orientation and skill development to future leaders of Ophthalmology in the Asia-Pacific regions.

Program Goals

  1. Identify individuals with the potential to become leaders in Ophthalmology.
  2. Provide orientation and skills to allow potential leaders to promote Ophthalmology locally and regionally.
  3. Facilitate the promotion of program graduates into leadership positions both locally and regionally.
  4. Build a culture to serve the Ophthalmology society.

Selection Criteria

  1. Aged 45 or below
  2. Qualified eye doctor
  3. Visionary future leaders with passion and determination to serve the profession and society at-large

Proposed Program Outline

Selected candidates of the Leadership Enhancement Program and Award Scheme will attend the following sessions:

Overall program design:

  1. Orientation Session
  2. Workshop in APAO Congress - topics may include communication, effective negotiation, efficient committee meetings and more.
  3. Forum on issue management: serves to educate the leadership about critical issues facing Ophthalmology
  4. Self-initiated Project on Eye Care Development
  5. Graduation - Project presentation at another workshop in the next Congress.

Self-initiated Project

Objective: To enhance in some way the Ophthalmology profession, eye services and society at-large.

Major Areas:

  1. Technology and advancement
  2. Training and education
  3. Research and development
  4. Community work
  5. Miscellaneous

Program Recognition

Participants who successfully and satisfactorily complete all elements of the program and the self-initiated project will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement of the APAO Leadership Enhancement Program from the Academy.
