APAO Congress 2005

The 20th Congress of Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology was held in Malaysia at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Center and Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel, from the 27th - 31st March 2005. The response was overwhelming with a total of 2,969 participants from 52 countries recorded for the congress.

Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony was held on 28th March 2005 and the Malaysian Minister of Health, Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek graciously declared the congress officially open. During this ceremony, leading international and regional ophthalmologists were recognized. The Congress Banquet was held on 29th March 2005. The King and Queen of Malaysia graced the Congress Banquet with their presence.

Scientific Programme

All the Scientific Programmes were very well attended. The programmes included 4 Named Lectures, 10 Plenary sessions with 39 presentations, 3 Live Surgery sessions, 28 Symposiums with 198 presentations, 206 free papers, 312 posters, 32 videos in video symposium, 75 instruction courses, 8 skills transfer courses, and 2 workshops. The contributions by the 257 speakers, many of them from the Asia-Pacific region, had enlightened the delegates in all the various subspecialties of ophthalmology. The comprehensive coverage of the subspecialties had received very good remarks from the attending delegates.

Exhibition

The Trade Exhibition was held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Center and had 150 booths with 57 companies represented (Russia, China, India, Pakistan, US, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan) and over 800 exhibitors present to exhibit their latest tools and technology.
