APAO Medal

Jose Rizal Medal (Gold)

APAO awards the most prestigious the "Jose Rizal Medal" to outstanding ophthalmologist for excellence in ophthalmology in Asia-Pacific region. This medal was instituted to commemorate the memory of Dr Jose Rizal, an ophthalmologist who became a national hero of the Philippines. The medal is awarded at APAO Congress by the Council of the APAO. Because of its high honor, this medal is presented by the dignitary officiating at the opening ceremony.

As this medal measures outstanding contributions, it is not awarded if no suitable candidate is found.

APAO Named Special Lectures and Awards

De Ocampo Lecture

The De Ocampo Lecture is the highest award for excellent academic achievements. Speakers are ophthalmologists from Asia and the Pacific region, who have an outstanding clinical or basic research background. It honors Dr Geminiano De Ocampo, the founding President of APAO.

Holmes Lecture

The Holmes Lecture is the highest award for exceptional contributions in preventive ophthalmology, especially in the prevention of blindness in Asia-Pacific region. It honors Dr William J Holmes, the founding Secretary- General of APAO.

Sir John Wilson Lecture

The Sir John Wilson Lecture awards outstanding personalities from outside the Asia-Pacific region, but who have made exceptionally valuable contributions to ophthalmology in the Asia-Pacific area. No award shall be made if no suitable candidate is identified.

It honors the memory of Sir John Wilson for his remarkable contribution to the prevention of blindness in the Asia-Pacific region.

Susruta Lecture

The Susruta Lecture recognizes extraordinary contributions to cataract surgery, whatever the aspect. Priority is given to ophthalmologists who have contributions to the control if mass cataract blindness, which is a perennial problem in the Asia-Pacific region. It honors Susruta, an ancient Indian physician.

Nakajima Award

The Nakajima Award honors individuals for their outstanding international work in ophthalmology. The candidate should preferably be 40 years and below, who has led in international activities helping to develop ophthalmology. This criterion is important to encourage the younger ophthalmologists to play a more active role in the development of ophthalmology. The international activities should be related to prevention of blindness, ophthalmic service and research particularly related to one of the major blinding conditions such as cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, corneal grafting, keratomalacia, trachoma and corneal ulcer.

Arthur Lim Award

The Arthur Lim Award recognizes the ophthalmologists who have exhibited exemplary leadership in ophthalmology, leading to substantial improvements in ophthalmic teaching and training in their region and beyond. It honors Prof Arthur Lim, former President and Secretary-General of APAO.

APAO Distinguished Service Awards

Distinguished Service Awards

The Distinguished Service Awards are presented to ophthalmologists of member organizations, who have given distinguished service to Ophthalmology in their country or tariff territories. The Selection Committee shall recommend to Council not more than two names from each country or tariff territory in any one Congress year.

APAO Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Awards

Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Awards

The Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Awards are given to individuals or organizations who have contributed outstanding prevention of blindness works in the Asia-Pacific area. The Selection Committee shall recommend to Council not more than one name from each country or tariff territory in any one Congress year.

ICO Golden Apple Award for the Best Clinical Teacher in Ophthalmology in the APAO Region

The ICO Golden Apple Award has been given to the best teacher of clinical ophthalmology of a supranational region. The purpose of this medal is to honor the teaching efforts of great teachers in clinical ophthalmology across the world.
