Dear Friends and Colleagues, Welcome to the website of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO). APAO is a federation of ophthalmology societies fostering the growth of ophthalmology and visual sciences to preserve and protect vision of the peoples of the Asia Pacific region. We are witnessing incredible development in the world of modern ophthalmology due to recent spectacular advances in medical science and technology. However, even more incredible is the continuing advancement of Asian ophthalmology supported by the unbelievable economic explosion of countries in our area of the world. Members of the APAO are spread over a wide spectrum of social, economical, cultural and religious backgrounds and are delivering eye care to people comprising more than 60% of the world's entire population. This may represent the greatest diversity of a single medical society on Earth. However, I believe that we as Asian ophthalmologists are also probably the most enthusiastic and hard-working among fellow ophthalmologists world over. We are not afraid of the discrepancy in wealth, religion, language and so forth of our patients. If anything, this divergence gives us greater reason to share information and further ophthalmic education in order to further the cause of eye care. A website is a very effective way of communication and information sharing and I would encourage all our APAO colleagues to visit the site and actively contribute to the online educational activities.
