Prof. Arthur SM Lim
Professor Arthur SM Lim is a Clinical Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, National University of Singapore; Chairman, Singapore Eye Research Institute; Founding Medical Director, Singapore National Eye Centre and President-Elect, Singaproe Medical Alumni Association. He was also Chief Examiner of the Joint M Med (Ophthalmology)/FRCS (Edinburgh) Examination. Professor Lim is not only a renowned a medical specialist, but also an author, teacher, artist and sportsman He has led a life brimming with adventures in medicine, education, fund-raising and alumni activities.
Professor Lim holds a host of international appointments. He is Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, Founding President of the World Eye Surgeons Society, and Honorary Life President of the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He is a recipient of several international awards with the most remarkable being the Jose Rizal Medal (1983), the highest award of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, the Barraquer Gold Medal (1996), The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Sir Pehin Aziz Medal (2001), the International Council of Ophthalmology Golden Apple Award for the Best Clinical Teacher in Asia (2003) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Special Recognition Award (2006). He is a member of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis and board member on the international advisory boards of the Lions Eye Institute (Perth, Australia) and the Asia-Pacific Society of Eye Genetics (Hong Kong). For his significant contribution to world ophthalmology, three special lectures have been named after him: LIM Lecture of the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (1990), Arthur Lim International Lecture of the Singapore National Eye Centre (1999) and Arthur Lim Lecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2000).
Professor Lim has written over 30 books and more than 300 scientific papers and lectures and he is on the editorial boards of 10 international scientific journals. His book "The Colour Atlas of Ophthalmology" has a print run of 43,000 copies in nine languages - English, Malay, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, French, Finnish, German and Portuguese and is a highly recommended adopted textbook for undergraduates in many countries. Indefatigable in his efforts to impart his skills, both locally and overseas, he conducted a live surgery demonstration on implants, which was transmitted in Milan, Italy on 23 October 1998. In addition to live surgery demonstration, he has also convened numerous teaching courses extensively in Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, People's Republic of China, Myanmar, France, India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. For the last decade, he has devoted his time between his own private practice in Singapore and the teaching centres he helped to establish in China (Tianjin, Xiamen, Ningxia, Lanzhou, and Jinan). Currently, he is the Honorary Director of the Tianjin Medical University Eye Centre, Tianjin, People's Republic of China.
